Event details

Unseasonal rains and hailstorm have damaged rabi crops in several parts of the Terai region. While the harvest of wheat, mustard and barley is near, the showers and hailstorm occurring barely for fifteen minutes on Monday afternoon have hit the farmers badly. Natthu Lal Bathla, a farmer from Jafarpur village said that his harvested mustard crop lying in the open fields was also damaged in the rains. The rainfall led to declining in temperature, with a dip of 4 degrees Celsius in the minimum and maximum temperatures, while cloudy conditions prevailed in the region. Harbhajan Singh, another farmer from Khanpur village, said that about 20 percent of his wheat crop which has got flattened may get damaged. "The rains will not affect the crop much, but the hailstorm and the strong winds have caused serious damage to wheat and other perishable crops mainly peas, potato, and cauliflower", Singh added. Agronomist Dr. Anil Hafeez said that the rain and hail experienced in this region on Monday has exacerbated agricultural damage. "A meagre proportion of wheat and pea crop has been damaged due to the hail. But if the weather conditions prevail, then the loss may further increase", he added. Meanwhile, a meteorologist at the GB pant university, Pantnagar, Dr. RK Singh said that the strong winds may trouble the farmers for another couple of days.
